DIY CCTV Installation

If you have decided to take matters into your own hands and do a CCTV installation yourself then there are certain basic aspects that your should consider before going ahead and doing a CCTV installation. First thing is first you should have a basic understanding of the equipment you are dealing with and a good working knowledge of wiring practices and techniques. Working at heights and with electricity can always be dangerous so be careful.

CCTV Installation Planning

The first step of any CCTV installation is planning where you are going to place the camera and video equipment. When looking at camera locations you need to take into consideration low light conditions and never place the camera pointing directly into the sunlight. Use infrared cameras for very dark conditions. Selecting the best camera locations is not easy as this will impact directly on the quality of image. You need to place your cameras strategically unless you want total coverage in which case you are going to need more cameras. Avoid overlapping camera views.

Wiring for CCTV Installation

When you have determined camera placement you need to look at cable placement and if it is feasible to run cables to the locations you have selected. The most time consuming and important part of DIY CCTV installation is the wiring. Remember to use good quality wiring and never run cables alongside high power electrical lines.

Camera mounting and connection

When it comes to mounting your camera you will find most CCTV installation units come with brackets and screws. The connection of cables from the camera and the monitor requires time and you may need to call in an electrician if you are not comfortable doing it yourself. Once you are all connected you can turn on your camera and monitor and check that you are all up and working and adjust your picture accordingly.
